Replica of the Nina In Baton Rouge

Replica of Columbus' famed ship in River City

"In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue."

This famous line that many school children in Baton Rouge and elsewhere learn comes to life from today until January 2. A replica of Columbus’ ship, the Nina, is docked here in Baton Rouge and available for viewing at the Louisiana Veterans War Memorial/USS Kidd. The Advocate reports on the details of the Nina replica:

The Niña may be the most authentic reproduction of the three ships
Columbus used in 1492 to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It was built in an
effort to reproduce not only the size and shape, but the shipbuilding
methods used in Columbus’ day. A diesel engine, added after
construction, was necessitated by insurance concerns, Sanger said.
