Garbage Collection Fees to Increase in Baton Rouge

New fees in response to elimination of property tax

Garbage collection fees on Baton Rouge real estate are set to increase to $19 a month. This is mainly in an effort to balance the parish budget and leave more room to hire police officers and others. Southeast News reports on the reasoning behind the increase in garbage collection fees for Baton Rouge:

"A plan was put forth in 2006 to phase out the property tax in the parish," said Marsha J. Hanlon, City-Parish finance director. "…becasue the City-Parish cannot subsidize garbage collection, this increase plan was enacted."
