State Legislators Consider How to Spend $1.1 Billion Surplus

Many legislators want to improve Louisiana roads with the money

It’s not too often that any government sees a surplus. But Louisiana is seeing one right now. An expected budget surplus of $1.1 billion is expected, and state legislators are already deciding what they want to do with the money. High on the list is improving Louisiana roads and infrastructure, reports the Advocate:

At a state budget meeting Friday, lawmakers talked about spending the
surplus on highway construction and on reducing the retirement systems’
debt. Other legislators mentioned similar priorities. …

State Rep. Jim Fannin, D-Jonesboro, said the state needs to tackle a $14 billion backlog in road and bridge projects.

An improvement in Louisiana roads and infrastructure, like the projects proposed by the Mobility Fund, would also help improve Baton Rouge real estate, and real estate in other areas of Louisiana.
