Baton Rouge has a New Downtown
Downtown Baton Rouge has transformed into what reknowned urban-planner Andres Duany envisioned; a happening downtown area, friendly and welcoming to those of all ages and interests.
When Duany came to Downtown Baton Rouge a decade ago, he saw that the city was doing several things right. They were providing basic levels of services while researching planning decisions for future growth. However, the dowtown area also contained several unsafe and undesirable features such as one-way streets and dark, surface parking lots.
Duany knew that by taking the good and reshaping the bad, downtown Baton Rouge could return to it’s historic roots with a spark for new features. Since 1998, investments have been made by public and private entities that have agreed with Duany in order to create a new downtown. Since then, the downtown area is now polished with a variety of museums and public places.
A few new features:
- A new convention center (still in development)
- The old Capitol House Hotel was reborn as a Hilton Hotel at Capitol Center
- The Shaw Center for the Arts is a beautiful addition to the downtown streetscape, as w
- A new museum, theater and restaurant venue
