2008 Was a Fantastic Year for Baton Rouge LA
While the nation suffered economically Baton Rouge had one of its best years in terms of business. Large companies announced expansion or relocation to the Baton Rouge area, reinforcing its position as one of the top 10 recession-proof cities in the country. In a recent Business Report article by Anna Thibodeaux, Adam Knapp, Baton Rouge Area Chamber CEo/President was quoted as saying that “2008 could ultimately be recognized as one of the most significant years in the history of the Baton Rouge area’s economy.” Coca Cola, Albemarle and Exxon Mobil are among the companies committed to Baton Rouge and their commitment can only mean an even stronger 2009.
Baton Rouge expanded in industries such as energy and biotechnology and, in the same Business Report article, Stephen Moret (Louisiana Economic Development Secretary) said, “Dozens of companies announced expansion in or relocations in Louisiana, kicking off projects that will create over 17,000 new jobs, $2.5 billion in new capital investment, and billions in new sales for small businesses. In 2008, Louisiana attracted investments in our traditional industries such as shipbuilding and petrochemicals, as well as newer growth industries like nuclear energy, valued-added agribusiness, alternative energy and digital media.” There is no doubt that Baton Rouge has proven to be a tough city, capable of riding out the storm that is battering our country.
