May was a good month for Louisiana.  11,000 jobs were added to the southern state in May and first quarter data displayed that overall personal income was up as well.  Government jobs were on the rise and Federal stimulus money is seen as a big boost for the state of Louisiana.  In addition, initial jobless claims decreased by over 5% last week for the State of Louisiana.

While unemployment remains an issue across the United States, Louisiana appears to be recovering better than m ost.  Baton Rouge recently received excellent rankings by the Brookings Institute and is seen as one of the top 21 cities out of the 100 largest metropolitan areas of the Country. While the road to recovery is slow and steady, Louisiana is faring far better than most.

The Passionate Poetry Pajama Party is a wonderful literary event happening in Baton Rouge this Saturday.  The annual event is being held at Avoyelles, 333 Third Street in Downtown Baton Rouge.  Celebrating the art of the spoken word, the poetry event is a fundraiser for a group of Baton Rouge poets who are headed to a national poetry contest.  The local group of poets is known as the Baton Rouge Poetry Alliance.

Baton Rouge LA is holding its own according to recent research. The latest MetroMonitor report form the Brookings Institute continues to rank Baton Rouge LA as a city that is among the top 21 strongest performing metro areas.  The report and rankings come from a list of criteria that includes housing, employment, and GMP and the changes that have occurred in each area since the recession started.

Baton Rouge has not had nearly the drop in employment as other areas of the Country, a 2.7% drop in the first quarter compared with a 16.1% drop in  employment in the worst metropolitan area.  Baton Rouge is a US city with one of the lowest current unemployment rates.
