East Baton Rouge Passes School Tax Extension

East Baton Rouge Parish schools to continue to receive sales tax money

Back in 1998, East Baton Rouge approved a school tax that amounted to a one-penny sales tax. In 2003, an extension was approved by the voters to continue this practice to benefit East Baton Rouge Parish schools. And this year, voters again made the move to fund education. The Advocate reports that this time the East Baton Rouge penny sales tax will be extended for 10 years rather than five:

This time, the East Baton Rouge Parish school system is seeking not a
five-year extension, but a 10-year extension. If renewed, the tax is
expected to raise about $871 million between 2009 and 2019.
